Rory SutherlandUK’s leading ad man and Ogilvy & Mather’s Vice-Chairman believes that Twitter is a long term player and will be more valuable than Facebook in the long term as it has a ‘great deal of hidden revenue potential’. Rory who is credited with turning Microsoft into a major consumer brand in 80’s goes on to say that although Facebook might be the most popular social network at the moment, it could struggle to maintain that position in the future.

It is interesting to note that these comments come at a time when Facebook is gearing for its IPO and also about to touch the one billion user mark. Rory adds “I can see Facebook being superseded more easily than Twitter being superseded, as a forum for outbursts, Twitter’s [character] limit, its haiku element is very appealing. I wouldn’t bet against it being more valuable [than Facebook] in the long term“. (more…)

Samsung Galaxy S3

There’s a lot to say about the new Samsung Galaxy S3, but let’s start with those all-important specifications. The new Samsung Galaxy S3 is slender and curvaceous, but despite Samsung’s talk of its Hyperglaze finish, you can’t get away from the fact that this is a very plastic phone. While Apple has its glass-finish on the iPhone 4S, HTC has oxidised metal on the One S, and Nokia uses a polycarbonate lozenge shape on the Lumia 800, it’s hard to get equally excited about the S3′s finish.

The Samsung Galaxy S3′s stand out attribute is its 4.8in super HD AMOLED screen. This OLED-based display has a headline resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, however it’s not a Plus-branded display, so I’m assuming it doesn’t have red, green and blue subpixels for every pixel, reducing colour accuracy and so the actual resolution of the display. On the plus side, the high headline resolution does help offset many of these problems; plus it does have all the usual advantages of OLED over LCD, with deep blacks, vibrant colours and lower-than-usual power consumption. The next device up in Samsung’s line is the Galaxy Note with its 5.3in screen, but the S3 looks far smaller and seems very pocket friendly. (more…)

Research In Motion showed off a BlackBerry 10 connected Porsche Carrera during the BlackBerry World keynote this morning. Thorsten Heins pointed out that while it has 4 screens throughout the car, they are not actually separate devices. It’s a connected ecosystem based on BlackBerry 10, all controlled by one device. This looks incredible, and I can’t wait to see it available for the public.

Adobe announces CS6/Creative Cloud

The long awaited major update to the entire Adobe Creative Suite was announced this week. There is some seriously major updates to many of the applications, but perhaps the biggest news is the new Creative Cloud. Creative Cloud is Adobe’s new offering where you pay a monthly fee to get full access to all of Adobe’s software, plus much much more!

I’ve compiled a handful of links here–including how to download Photoshop CS6 right now!

The base price (when you pay for 12 months) is $49.99 per month. That equates to roughly $600 per year, which is the same as upgrades to two Adobe Products (they are usually $299 for an upgrade).

The month-to-month plan is $79.99 per month so that makes it substantially more expensive. It might be a good choice if you only need access to the programs a couple of months, but in that case it might be cheaper to just do a regular upgrade of the products that you need so you have them as a boxed product. When the name Garmin is presented, what comes across your mind? Most of us would think that a GPS navigation system will be the topic here, but not for today. Garmin has something different in store– which is actually the new Approach S3 Touchscreen GPS Golf Watch. As the name suggests, this is one timepiece that deserves to see action whenever you are ready to tee off. Since golf is not only about lowering the number of strokes each time you play but will also touch on the issue of style, you can be sure that no one is going to question your fashion sense when you strap the Approach S3 around your wrist.

After all, it has been described to be stylish, coming in a rugged and waterproof form factor. This high-resolution glove-friendly touchscreen device will also be pre-loaded with 27,000 worldwide courses to begin with – and more information on newer courses will be added in the long run, where you need not fork out additional subscriptions or fees. If you want, you can wear the Approach S3 as a day to day timepiece, and whenever you are ready to tee off, you can then take advantage of its features such as Green View with manual pin positioning, distances to doglegs and layup points, customizable yardage points and digital scorecards. In South Africa, there is yet another silent revolution going on. It’s the “Take a girl child to work today” campaign. SAVE THE DATE: 31 MAY 2012.

Cell C is the driving force behind the campaign. It is an initiative to “deepen the thinking of the young females with regard to their infinite roles in society, enhance their self-esteem, inspire and motivate them to reach to reach their full potential and through exposure to diverse careers and positive role models assist them to prepare for the world of work”.

The initiative is a joint effort between Government, the Department of Education, business and the public.

I was amazed to know that, ‘Take a Girl Child to Work Day” has become South Africa’s “largest collaborative act of volunteerism” (The Encylopedia of Brands and Branding in South Africa in association with Sunday Times)

The project was actually started by the Ms. Foundation in the United States where it launched Take our Daughters to work Day in 1993

The initiative is aimed at girls in Grade 8-12 at a time when they are making career and education choices. The idea is for the girls to shadow the host all day. Watching how people solve problems and cope with crises in the workplace is also an important part of the learning experience.

Achievements to date:

  • an estimated 500 000 girl children have participated in the campaign
  • 1 800 public and private sector partnerships have been brokered
  • secured participation from the Presidency, business and government leaders
  • 40 000 to 50 000 girl children participate in the campaign annually
  • Over 1000 schools participate on the day
